Research
In a study published this week researchers at the University of Southampton say that regular coffee drinking could reduce your chances of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the scarring of the liver that occurs as a result of long term toxins from drinking alcohol or from viruses like hepatitis c. It is a disease that can be fatal as it can cause liver failure and even cancer. It is the 11th cause of death in the US killing nearly 32,000 people. The World Health Organisation say that cirrhosis is responsible for 1.3% of deaths worldwide.
Effects Of Caffeine
The research involved looking at nine long term studies of half a million men and women and found that an extra 2 cups of coffee a day may reduce your risk of cirrhosis by as much as 44%. Why this is is unclear although it is thought to be the effects of caffeine.
Further research is now planned into the possible harmful effects of coffee to enable medical experts to have a fuller picture.
